Lidwien Smit
Lidwien Smit is Full Professor of One Health and Environmental Epidemiology at Utrecht University and leads the One Health Microbial group within the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences. Using an interdisciplinary One Health approach, her team investigates health risks at the human–animal–environment interface. Her research focuses on environmental and occupational exposure assessment, particularly of microbial and other biological agents. She also examines their associations with respiratory and infectious diseases.
Lidwien Smit leads the Living Lab Workplace emissions in Pillar III. In this Living Lab, the initial focus is on particulate matter and biological agents. The aim is to focus on the interpretation of measurable data coming from high-concern occupational sectors:
- Developing tools to measure a large variety of biological (and chemical) stressors that potentially impose health risks;
- Allow easy-to-use methods to collect and monitor the air components of the (biological) exposome in workplace settings;
- Increase agency for workers and employers to collectively monitor, analyse and make policy around air quality.
